What we respond to.

Hegins Valley Fire-Rescue covers Hegins Township, about 32 square miles of farm valley and wooded ridge with some 3,300 people in Hegins, Valley View and the countryside between, and its crews turn out for neighbors in Hubley, Barry, Upper Mahanoy and Porter townships. The challenges are the ones a rural company knows: long roads, few hydrants, trees and wires down after every storm, and brush fires on the mountain roads in the dry months. The reward is the other side of the same coin: a company that knows every road and most of the families on it, and neighbors who turn out for each other. The calls, by kind

Trees and wires

The most common call in the log: fallen trees, wires down and arcing lines on East Mountain Road, Gap Street, Deep Creek Road and the valley's other roads, mostly in Hegins Township.

Crashes and rescues

Thirteen vehicle accidents on East Main Street, Gap Street, Deep Creek Road and Bear Valley Road, three with entrapment, plus an off-road rescue and four helicopter landing zones.

Brush and woods fires

Eight brush fires between November and March on East Mountain Road, Hill Road, Line Mountain Road and Deep Creek Road, often with DCNR and neighboring companies.

Structure fires

House, shed and commercial fires in Hegins and neighboring townships, and working fires where the company turned out for its neighbors.
